Nitro Buggy Podium

Gulf Coast Raceway has been especially popular of late, due in no small part to its successful bid to host the ROAR Fuel Nats this year. Not that drawing entries to this gem of a facility in Porter, Texas has ever been an issue; but with each event held there serving as a warm up for the Nationals, it’s no surprise that this past weekend’s first round of RC Pro’s Texas State Series was stacked with the region’s fastest and those chasing them. Nearly 250 entries vied for hardware and prizes in Open and Intermediate classes of nitro and electric buggy, nitro truggy, and Pro4 short course.

After Friday practice, competitors prepared themselves mentally and physically for a grueling Saturday. As is the custom for Texas State Series races, the full race program would begin Saturday after the 8:30 driver’s meeting and run straight through until the end if the last A main in wee hours of Sunday morning.

New RC Pro Series director James Manderano kicked things off promptly Saturday morning and masterfully kept the program on pace throughout all three rounds of qualifying and the mains. With the main listing posted, Team FTW was poised for domination with a TQ sweep—Smiley Henn in Pro4, David Joor in E-buggy, and Jason Branham in Nitro Buggy and Truggy.

Pro4 was decided after the conclusion of the A2 main. TQ Brian “Smiley” Henn would not be denied his usual Pro4 victory at GCR. Mike “Ironman” Battaile wheeled his Traxxas machine into the second spot while Isaac Price took an impressive third in his debut with Team FTW.

The Electric buggy battle was also all-FTW, featuring TQ Joor, Henn, Jake Dellinger, and Tyler Hooks. Dellinger took the overall win, followed by Joor, Henn, and Hooks.

Jason Branham’s truggy adventure began with him still assembling his truck while the first qualifier proceeded without him, and ended with him on top of the podium. Battaile qualified third but technical issues prevented him from mounting a challenge to Branham.

Nitro buggy saw Jason Branham in familiar territory, at the front of the pack looking comfortable in his second outing back with Team Xray. Dellinger climbed to within striking distance of Branham and stole the lead twice. Ultimately Branham would prevail, making it two for two in 2013 after his HARC series round one win in January. Roger Ayres’ cruised to third with his new Team Associated ride, Battaile took fourth, and Joor recoved from a disastrous first lap to take the fifth and final podium spot.

Aaron Royston took home one more piece of hardware for Team FTW with his third place finish in the intermediate Electric buggy.

With typical disregard for the status quo, FTW’s hybrid style/engineering section set forth to create a sleek short course body with a menacing visage and a propensity for discarding air during flight. The usual months of research and track testing ensued. Soon forty-hour work weeks sounded like a vacation. Coffee and energy drinks obliterated the project’s budget. Diamondback is the result. Innovation in design creates the illusion of a lean, chopped cab profile. A high-rise cowl induction hood was integrated with a provision for a huge cutout to shed underhood air. The raked windshield flows into a lowered center section of the roof, terminating in a gaping cutout provision strategically recessed into the back of the cab to further mitigate the parachute effect. Additional cutout provisions in the bed area are surrounded by a roll cage. LED-effect taillight decals finish up the rear, completing the image that will become familiar to the competition.

Diamondback fits most 1:10 short course trucks including Losi’s SCTE and XXX-SCT, Team Associated’s SC10 and SC104x4, and Traxxas’ Slash and Slash 4×4. Diamondback is formed from premium clear .040” polycarbonate. It comes unpainted and includes two decal sheets and window masks.

AMITE, LA — In a quaint hamlet in Louisiana this past weekend the top drivers in the Southeast battled it out for glory in the Cajun Classic. The commodious Florida Parishes Arena housed an awesome track built by the artist whose paintbrush is a skid-steer–Joey “The Dirt” Christensen. An option lane and a massive 7′ step-up highlighted the expansive, flowing track layout. Except for the unyielding assault of the equatorial humidity it was the perfect setting for the battles to come.

During Friday practice Team FTW looked fast as usual. Representing FTW this weekend were Mike Battaile, Jason Branham, Jake Dellinger, David Joor, and Joshua Riewe. Early in practice the inside option lane seemed to be the fast line. However, as practice progressed most of the fast guys discovered the smaller entrance to the outer option lane was more bark than bite, and the three rollers were preferable to the inside’s double-double. Despite a healthy dose of rocky bits and sand the track was relatively easy on tires.

After three rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Branham TQ’d in Pro Buggy with his Agama A8, Dellinger TQ’d Pro E-buggy with his RC8.2E, and Andrew Clark added another FTW TQ by dominating the Open buggy class with his XB9.

Sunday commenced with the first of the triple A-mains in the electric classes. Riewe faced the daunting task of chasing Traxxas Slash guru Mike Battaile for the Pro 2 title. Dellinger was off to a good start in Pro E-Buggy.

The electric mains were punctuated midday by the feature nitro races. Clark drove his FTW Night Fox-equipped Xray to a convincing victory in Open Buggy. Later the Pro Buggy A-main featured a series of very physical battles on the track. TLR’s Ryan Lopez made the best of it, eventually taking the win. Dellinger avoided most of the shenanigans and earned a hard-fought second. Joor persevered after some early bobbles to take third.

Triple-A mains resumed afterward. In Pro 2, Riewe went went for an all-or-nothing holeshot attempt in A2, his one shot to best Battaile’s intrepid Slash, but came up short. Battaile would secure the top spot and Riewe the second podium position. Later Dellinger completed his domination of Pro E-buggy, adding the first place plaque to his TQ. Battaile would stand next to Dellinger on that podium with a second place finish in the class.

In addition to all the Team FTW podium appearances, a lot of other FTW-equipped rides appeared in the A-mains. FTW would like to congratulate all of them along all of the other FTW-equipped drivers that were a part of the action.
